Oral surgery (Extraction of wisdom teeth, bone grafting procedures)
Corner Cove Dental staff are adept in performing various oral surgeries, the most common being the extraction of wisdom teeth, all the way to bone grafting procedures.
Wisdom teeth are the last of our permanent teeth to erupt through the gums at the back of our mouths and are often called the third molars. In some people these teeth do not erupt with any dental issues or may not develop at all. However, others develop impacted wisdom teeth, where the tooth does not have enough room to grow straight and damages other parts of the mouth or causes pain and infection.
In this case, the wisdom tooth is extracted by making an incision in the gum tissue and removing bone and the tooth before cleaning and stitching closed the wound. Impacted wisdom teeth are removed to eliminate the pain and any infection that may have been caused and returns normal functionality of the teeth
In the situation of needing to replace bone in the mouth area instead of remove it, our dentists are able to offer a bone grafting procedure. Jawbone can diminish when teeth are missing as there is no longer anything for the bone to support. Therefore, a bone graft is necessary to accommodate surgeries, such as dental implants, or even for the mouth to support dentures.
In one of these procedures a piece of bone will be taken from another part of the body, or more likely a piece will be made from special bone grafting material, and will be grafted to the jawbone. After weeks, in which the graft would have created new strong bone, the jawbone will be back at full strength to accommodate other procedures.
Although bone grafting or teeth extraction may sound scary, our dentists are there to answer any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure and make sure you know what to do before and after such a surgery.
